Anti-Aging: Start In Your Twenties!

Believe it or not, research has shown that our skin begins to show signs of aging around age 25. Which is why it’s so important to begin a science-backed, anti-aging, personalized skincare regimen sooner rather than later! Prevention is much more helpful and practical than trying to “reverse nature” once the damage has been done. So… what should you be doing in your twenties in order to age as gracefully as possible? Well, I’m glad you asked…


I know I sound like a broken record over here, but adding SPF into your skincare regimen every single day is truly so critical! Harmful UV rays cause sun damage and sun damage can greatly age your skin over time. It’s also crucial to remember that not all sunscreens are created equal… When looking to purchase your next bottle of sunscreen, don’t forget to read the label. We recommend always using SPF 30 at minimum, while also opting for broad spectrum sunscreen when possible! The term “broad spectrum” means that your lotion is formulated to protect against both ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B rays. A couple of our personal favorites include EltaMD UV Clear Broad Spectrum SPF 46 and also AlumierMD Clear Shield Broad Spectrum. Oh, and don’t forget to reapply every two hours – especially when sweating or swimming!

Next up: retinol. Retinol is a powerful, vitamin A based product that works to promote cell turnover. Being that it works as a preventative against fine lines and wrinkles, it’s most effective when used prior to visible signs of aging. Retinol also boosts collagen production, diminishing the appearance of pores and giving the skin a plump, healthy appearance. When shopping for retinol, it is critical to be aware of the true retinol percentage. Many drugstore brands are able to market and sell their products as retinol, when in actuality, their products only contain a small percentage of retinoid complex. In order to see visible results, we recommend most patients start by using a serum with a concentration between .25-.5%, two to three times a week at night before bed. At TSC, we love PCA Skin’s Intensive Age Refining .5% Pure Retinol  or AlumierMD’s .25% Serum. (Note: Retinol should not be used if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.)

External stressors such as pollution and radicals from the environment can also lead to accelerated aging signs like fine lines, loss of collagen and dark spots. One of the most tried and tested ingredients is L-ascrobic acid – found in many vitamin C serums. We recommend adding a Vit-C with a 10-15% concentration of L-ascrobic acid into your personalized skin care regimen. A few of our favorites include PCA C&E Advanced & Vivier Radiance Serum (both great for patients with a higher risk of hyperpigmentation), as well as iS Clinical Pro Heal Vitamin C for acne prone skin.

Each year we lose about 1 % of collagen, which is the glue that holds our skin together. As we enter the later decades, incorporating other ingredients and services like peptides, microneedling, or lasers can have significant benefits to prevent deeper lines and further loss of firmness.


Also, please don’t disregard your diet and lifestyle! Anti-aging goes beyond simply implementing a topical regimen.. The foods we eat along with our daily habits and choices can greatly impact the appearance of skin over time. Eating whole foods is one of the most simplistic ways in which we can tend to our skin care. The gut microbiome and skin microbiome stay in constant communication. Consuming a clean diet filled with foods containing sufficient vitamins, minerals, and nutrients naturally enhances the appearance of the skin, working in tandem with your topical anti-aging regimen.

Of course, we would be remiss if we did not remind you of the importance of drinking plenty of water! Staying hydrated allows your body to do its job, naturally flushing out toxins and maintaining your skin’s elasticity. We can also help ourselves out by eating water-rich foods like celery or cucumber for example. In order to properly hydrate and absorb water, we need to be sufficient in certain minerals and nutrients, found in fruits and vegetables. “Eating your water” has been proven to allow the body to process and absorb H2O in a more efficient way.

While you may not see it now, many of the habits you implement in your twenties can and will effect you in later years. It’s no secret that smokers tend to age faster than non-smokers. Not only is smoking horrible for your lungs and overall health, but the thousands of toxic chemicals found in tobacco damage skin cells, provoking premature deep wrinkles. Dark spots, lines around the mouth area, and dullness are just a few more reasons to put down the cigarette. When it comes to anti-aging, sleep is another crucial factor. Turns out, “beauty sleep” is a real necessity! As we sleep, our bodies naturally detox from the day prior. As we slip into recovery mode, our bodies create growth hormones that create new cells, helping our skin heal from day time damage. Adults who sleep 7-9 hours a night on average have been shown to have healthier skin with less breakouts, under eye circles, and/or dullness.
