How to Build a Skincare Routine for Oily Skin

If you have oily skin, you would agree when we say that it comes with some challenges. As one of the most common skin concerns, it is linked with frequent acne breakouts, clogged pores, shiny complexion, and more.

Good thing, we won't have to hide our lovely looks for long. In this blog, we will learn about how to build a proper skincare routine for oily skin. You can also take our AI powered skincare routine quiz on this website to get accurate recommendations. Read on to know.

What Our Skin Experts Say

We have consulted with a couple of our skin experts concerning the proper skincare routine for an oily complexion. During the skin consultation, we have gathered several skincare facts that are too important not to share.

According to Dr. Prem Tripathi, facial plastic surgeon, TSC expert and medical advisor,

“when it comes to skin care routines,  It’s a common misconception that oily skin means it’s hydrated! Oil production can mean your skin is compensating for lack of moisture. Be gentle with exfoliants and limit them to 1-2x/ week, moisturize liberally and never forget that SPF”

Cleansing

When you consult with our skin experts, they'll surely tell you that cleansing is the most important step in all skincare routines. Cleansing your skin should be done once in the morning and the evening to ensure that it is free of dirt and excess oil. In some cases, double cleansing is also advisable.

Morning cleanse is as important as the one from the night before. Skin experts say that the skin regenerates when we sleep by shedding skin cells and producing oils. It is recommended by experts to use a good exfoliant or exfoliating cleanser that contains active ingredients such as salicylic acid. Salicylic acid cleansers helps clear away excess oils and dead skin cells that can lead to oil build-up and clogging of pores.

 Use Toner

After cleansing and making sure that the skin is free of any makeup, dirt, and oil, it's now ready for the next step: toner. A good toner - preferably one that contains salicylic acid, glycolic, or lactic acid - will help minimize the appearance of pores and protect it from harsh elements. Toners are also used to tighten and soothe the skin and provide additional moisture. For people with oily skin, toners are a great way to rid of impurities and ensure a more radiant and moisturized complexion.

Skin Treatment

There's no single skincare for oily skin that works for everyone. Every skin condition is different, therefore, this next step highly depends on every individual's skin concerns. You can treat your acne-prone skin with over-the-counter products such as benzoyl peroxide or sulfur. These ingredients help control oiliness and lessen acne breakouts. Especially for oily skin, products with retinol also work wonders in keeping the pores clear.

Make Moisturizing a Habit

Oily skin is not entirely bad, say our qualified professionals. They say people with oily skin have a better ability to withstand wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging than those who have dry skin. But having oily skin is not an excuse to skip moisturizers. Every skin type needs a moisturizer that keeps it plump and hydrated. Moisturizer helps prevent most skin problems as well, which is why you should look for one that suits your specific skin concerns. You have to be careful with what kind of moisturizer to use. For best results, choose a moisturizer that is lightweight, water-based, and doesn't contain oils.

It's also a wise decision to opt for moisturizers that are formulated for acne-prone skin such.

What Other Steps To Take

Taking care of oily skin does not end with a few skincare steps. Instead, there are other measures one should take. Once you have successfully managed your skin condition by sticking with a skincare routine for oily skin, you are ready to include one or few more steps into your everyday habit.

  • Blotting Papers

Oil control blotting papers help minimize the appearance of shiny complexion throughout the day. To use blotting papers, press a single sheet onto your skin for a few seconds to absorb oil. You can repeat this process as needed.

  •  Post-workout Cleanse

After exercise, you'll be drenched in sweat, and you don't want to wait long until you decide you wash up. If showering is not possible, make sure to at least wash your face immediately after. Washing your face after exercise will help remove sweat, oil, and dirt build-up, consequently preventing breakouts. Using wipes with salicylic acid is also very useful if you struggle with workout induced breakouts. We recommend wiping your face with these after washing and leave it on for 10 minutes before washing face again. Don't forget to apply an ample amount of moisturizer and SPF next.

  • Wear Sunscreen

This step is not optional. It is a must. Wearing sunscreen when going outside or stepping into the sun is a must. Make sure to use a sunscreen that has at least SPF 30 and contains ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These can help block sun damage and prevent acne breakouts, especially in oily and acne-prone skin. So, remember to protect your skin all the time.
